Conveniently situated within the horsey hub of Johannesburg, London Lane is a yard like no other. Riders and owners who choose London Lane as a home for their equine companions enjoy top facilities, exceptional horse care, full-service offerings and expert tuition – all within a beautifully manicured, spacious and peaceful property. Horses and riders from all walks of life are welcome at London Lane thanks to the variety of facilities and level of individualised care. London Lane is not only enjoyed by stablers and horses, but also by parents, family and friends who can have a cup of coffee or tea in the lapa overlooking the action in the arenas, or escape to the cool shade of the clubhouse.

London Lane Stud was established in 2006 when the Knoppjeslaagte property with only a house and cottage on the grounds was bought and turned into an equestrian facility and stud. Initially there were three partners involved: John Berry, who financed the property; Peter Claassens, a mining engineer who built the stables, arenas and clubhouse; and Bill Bramley, who paved the stables, walkways and driveways. John eventually bought out Peter and Bill’s shares in the property and is now the owner. The layout of the stables and yard was designed with many ideas from top local and overseas yards in mind. The extensive gardens were designed and landscaped by Tone Alexander.

Keeping London Lane Stud in top condition takes a lot of maintenance and planning on a daily basis. We have identified weak areas and systems along the way and are continuously upgrading and improving the infrastructure. A number of design elements inside the barn have been changed, such as new stable doors to keep the ‘Houdini’ horses from opening them and an indoor fly-spray system to keep flies to a minimum, and we have added extra security around the property and tack rooms. We installed an eight-horse walker, which is instrumental in keeping the horses healthy and fit. We have ensured regular maintenance of our arenas to make sure horse injuries are not a factor due to the good footing and surface areas. London Lane also opened its facilities for dressage clinics, hosting top international trainers, and we hope to do the same with showjumping clinics as well. Our clients can only benefit from and enjoy the added bonus of learning from top overseas instructors. We have also opened up our venue to individuals for their special photographic occasions, as the beautiful manicured grounds and landscaped gardens lend themselves as a wonderful and unique venue.

The facilities at London Lane include big, airy, cool stables with ample bedding, wide walkways and natural ventilation. We also offer paddocks of various sizes, the horse walker, indoor and outdoor wash bays, space for clients to park their horseboxes, and three large secured tack rooms inside the barn. All riders’ training and schooling needs are taken care of with the large jumping arena and a full dressage arena, both under irrigation, a 400m trotting track, a hedged lunge arena, and a fully equipped clubhouse and a large lapa overlooking the arenas with tea and coffee facilities. Services include washing numnahs, cleaning saddles, experienced grooms who are highly skilled at horse preparation for shows, and top livery care. Our stabling fees are inclusive of these and other services and there are no hidden or extra costs.

We encourage clients and guests to socialise and treat the yard as their home away from home. Riders, parents and friends can often be found relaxing at the boma or office, drinking a cup of tea, watching the beautiful sunsets and soaking up the wonderful peace and quiet.

London Lane is conveniently situated close to cross country grounds such as Fourways Riding Centre and Inanda Country Base, which is beneficial for eventers, as well as major show venues including Kyalami Park Club and Burlington Stables. The facilities and tuition suit multiple disciplines across the board and the yard is a haven for clients of all ages and levels, whether competitive or non-competitive. We also have a few older horses who are deservedly living out their retirement with us. Tailor-made stabling and instruction are planned to satisfy the individual needs and care of both rider and horse.
